Need a torch

It is so very, very dark here in the night – there are no stars and there is no moon.  I can quite see how it would be possible to slip over those cliffs. And how appealing they are, Schopenhauer-style, if you get close. I suppose it’s best to explore in the daytime when it’s easier to see the potholes in the road and which are the boggiest parts of the bog and where the cliffs plunge downwards. But when there is nothing to do in the night it is tempting to go outside.

There’s a nice looking box of letters in my room. It would be a distraction to look in it – it was left by someone called Pandora, apparently. I won’t look in it yet; I’ll save it for the morning in case I lose anything in the dark. Like my mind.
