Mitochondria

It is easy to become slothful and apathetic here, and to lose your mind in the most literal sense. I have felt my neural pathways fading away – just like the stars in that short story by Clarke (?) or Asimov (?) when the computer finds all the names of God and the universe must end. Digression – sorry. Anyway, to counter the tendency to slump into idiocy, we inmates have been set an end-of-week test. This week’s question is ‘explain the nature and role of mitochondria and relate them to your present situation.’

Here is my answer: ‘Mitochondria are really rogue DNA from ancestral bacteria, but have become so integrated into the new organism that they provide a completely essential symbiotic function in every cell. My abandoner is my spiritual mitochondria.’
