Day with the dead

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on March 30, 2010 by abandonata

I have an exeat to work in the Wellcome Library in London. I think the management were reassured that I would be surrounded by the works of the dead, written largely about their failure to stop others dying, usually of horrible conditions.

I like this place.

The dead are my friends. They always have been. They don’t argue, for one thing. They have world enough and time. Or neither. But either way, they are easy to get along with. And their tales of suffering are at least all over now, one way or another. Sic transit gloria mundi. Sic transit omnia.

If you are shipwrecked and adrift in a lifeboat with no hope of ever reaching land, is it better if there is or is not a fierce tiger in the lifeboat?

No pumpkins

I was allowed to invite some people to eat with me in my room in the SoD, new people who had never been part of my old life. Very strange – but neither they nor I changed into pumpkins at midnight, and I think I looked plausibly like a normal human being who would carry on living and doing ordinary things. Now I just need to appear again like someone who may do extraordinary things.

Like turn into a pumpkin? Ah, that’s it – I was already a pumpkin. There is work still to be done, then.

Dances with wolves

There are several options when you are thrown to the wolves:

1. be eaten
2. be suckled, Romulus-and-Remus-style (which is quite appealing, as it rather turns the tables on them and is close to eating the wolves, but still requires submission)
3. run away, but probably can’t run fast enough
4. beat wolves with a stick – lots of wolves, lots of fighting, sounds like unending struggle
5. subdue wolves, recruit them to your cause and become their ruler, Where-the-Wild-Things-Are-style

Option 5, please. Can I have my wolf costume now?

The mud outside is punctuated by tiny green dots of emerging grass.

Even Verdun became verdant, and poppies grew. But poppies are a poor exchange for live men, even men mired in mud and barbed wire. They are a poor exchange for one man.

Scapegoat or sacrifice

Are they the same thing? I think originally they were.

Not so keen on goats. Can I be a scapesheep? Or a scapedonkey? Or something less farmy – maybe a scapelobster or scapeseal.

Chicken-infested lands

There are chickens all over the place here – this is where chickens come home to roost. Practically none of these are my chickens, though. I dealt with my chickens, over the years – gave them a good home and listened to their squawking about guilt and responsibility and harm done. Now the place is flooded with someone else’s ignored chickens. I don’t mind the people who come and ask for redress for harm done, but these damn chickens – well, people should learn to let their chickens romp around in the sunlight and then shut them away when it gets dark. They don’t need to be roosting all over the place like this if you notice you have them and deal with them from the start.

Chickens have a habit of multiplying, too, if you ignore them. It’s never too late to chuck out eggs with embryos in; in fact, it’s never too late to get rid of surplus chickens. That’s what foxes are for. Anyone want to lend me a fox?
