How to stay in the Slough

Some people stay depressed on purpose. They are called Scots. Here is advice from a Scottish friend, given last night:

‘Live in the north where it is dark for all except three hours a day. In the summer, when it is lighter, drink a lot so that alcoholic depression keeps you depressed. Work in a job that is horrible, but has two weeks off a year. Spend 50 weeks a year waiting for the two weeks off. Then drink lots so that alcoholic depression keeps you low.’

I told him I wanted to move to a Mediterranean country where it is lighter and warmer. He said I’m not serious about this depression thing.

He could be right.
