Tightrope acrobatics

Acrobats used to walk a rope stretched between the Campanile and the Doge’s palace in Venice. The crowds watched to see them fall, of course.

I walk a tightrope every day, and she can tip me off balance with the slightest change of mood, shift of weight or altered posture. Sometimes I sway and stagger and recover, but rarely. Usually I fall spinning through the air to smash to pieces on the stones below. There is never a safety net. Every fall is a disaster. However good the day has been, when the fall comes, all is chaos once more.
