Who let the dogs out?

I suppose it was too much to hope that I was really allowed a holiday out of the Slough. It was a cruel trick. Who let the dogs out? And why did they have to be rabid?

On tour

I’ve been allowed to the eastern fringes of the Slough on a holiday. If it weren’t for the biting, rabid dogs and the fierce insects it might be almost indistinguishable from the world outside the Slough. But I’m only allowed ten days here and then I have to get back in my pit. Halfway through and the tunnel at the end of the light is starting to loom.

The last resort

Slough of Despond has a lot of writers passing through, and one of the things we have to do is take a look over the copy for the next season’s brochure and try to spice it up a bit. I’ve been working on their text:

‘The Slough of Despond is truly the last resort. There is no emergency exit and no safety procedures – we crash, you die.’

Whoever was here last had written ‘Abandon hope, all ye who enter here’ – which is a naff bit of Dante-snaffling and too much of a cliché. And it doesn’t sound very exciting – there has to be a bit of a challenge.
